Progress!

I have only just begun...
And I'm trying to figure out how in the world people reupholster all on their own. I have watched my mom work miracles with fabric before (which resulted in both praise and laughter at times - like those ginormous zebra pajama pants that she made for me). But I must have missed a few sewing lessons because it takes me quite a while to make progress.

BUT! I finally started taking the cushions apart, which made me pretty committed. It's hard to give up when it is staring you down all day. So I completed my first cushion.
What do you think?

Laugh a Little

When I saw this, I wanted to vomit and cheer all at the same time.
First, "What were they thinking?!?"
Then, "That's impressive!"
Really, those were my two thoughts.

The Great Sofa Debate

We have an antique sofa... that has a gorgeous shape and I love it. But the husband wants something more comfortable, like a sectional. So we go back and forth. Which would you choose?

The lovely antique?

Or the comfortable sectional?

Fabric ideas...

We have a pair of sofas that I purchased for my first apartment.
And now, I think it's time that I "modernize" them...

This was my original inspiration:

Have I found that perfect fabric? No.
Am I sold on any of these options? No.
But I have hope. :)
Really, it's more difficult to design for your own house than it is to design for others.

Do you like any of the fabrics above?
I'm just starting my search, so suggestions would be much appreciated. :)

Given a New Life

Since Monday's post I've been thinking of re-purposed furniture. It seems like we've seen it a lot lately, but that doesn't stop me from loving it and wanting to try it out myself.

Here are my favorite ideas to use furniture for something else:

Dressers turned bathroom vanities

Dresser turned kitchen island

Dresser turned into a bench

Nightstand turned play kitchen

Granny Gone Gorgeous

I love beautiful re-purposed things. These armoires have been so inspiring to see. First, they're granny furniture gone gorgeous. Second, they're painted... and who doesn't love a DIY project? And lastly they're used in unexpected ways. Why didn't I think of this? Who knows but I'm glad I've seen these lovely pics. Now I just need for find an armoire looking for a new home, new color and new purpose.

Dining Chairs

Well, this weekend was a DIY double-wammy. In addition to my wreath I decided to paint my dining chairs. The weather has been cooler and spray painting season is almost over. I don't have fabric to recover the seat cushions yet, but planned on getting that taken care after the holidays, so I needed to paint now so the chairs would be ready for new fabric in a few months.

I always prime. I've found that it takes less coats of color if I prime first. For some reason I use this stuff and it seems to stick to everything. It's also great for priming lamps. Oh and get the handle it's worth the money.

Here are my chairs before: I have a thing for old lady furniture, but that's another be You-nique inspired post.

After a coat of primer... see it sticks!

After: very dramatic.

I'm thinking I need a non-black fabric and something bold, graphic, and modern to off-set the old-lady vibe coming from the chairs. Any ideas? I'll share my favorite picks next week.

Until Spring Comes...

Okay I'm being completely serious...
I am going to keep talking about sunshine and spring until it actually comes!

Positive thinking, positing thinking, positive thinking...
I love snow and scarves and soups,
BUT let's be honest.
That season is supposed to be shorter than 6 months.
At least in my own little world. :)
